Statement on Federal ICE Raids I

The Korean American Federation of Los Angeles (KAFLA) strongly condemns these unilateral and heavy-handed actions by ICE, which disregard proper legal procedures.

We urgently call on our local elected officials to take action and provide solutions to this crisis.

In addition, we will work closely with local organizations to ensure that no individuals are unjustly harmed by this situation.

Statement on Federal ICE Raids II

As the current unrest remains unresolved, Donald Trump Jr.—the eldest son of President Trump—posted a message on June 8th via X (formerly Twitter), referencing the "rooftop Koreans" from the Los Angeles Civil Unrest 33 years ago. This reckless and insensitive post was widely perceived as ridiculing the gravity of the present crisis.

In moments of national tension, such rhetoric can deepen divisions, incite further unrest, and trivialize the painful histories of marginalized communities.

We strongly urge that the past traumas of the Korean American community—particularly those experienced during the 1992 LA Civil Unrest—never be exploited for political gain, humor, or provocation. These lived experiences deserve respect and remembrance, not mockery or manipulation.

Statement on Federal ICE Raids III

Last night (June 11th), a group of protesters entered Koreatown at around 9:00 PM and were met by the LAPD at the intersection of Wilshire Blvd. and Western Ave. Other groups of protesters were met between 1st and 3rd Street along Western Ave. Thanks to the LAPD’s swift response to deploy 220 officers and vehicles, the protesters were dispersed around 11:00pm and no damage was reported.

Today (June 12th), the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles (KAFLA) expressed its gratitude to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell for their swift response and efforts to maintain public safety, which helped protect Koreatown. KAFLA also requested that continued efforts be made to ensure the safety of the community until the current protest situation is fully resolved.

Additionally, we urge members of the Korean American community to do their part during this period by cooperating in the following ways:

1. Please refrain from using language, behavior, or posting content on social media platforms such as YouTube that could directly provoke or escalate tensions with protesters.

2. Please take extra care to ensure that your children do not get involved with protest groups. (There were many sighting of children at the protests last night.)

3. If you experience any damages, please report them to the LAPD. If you need assistance with the reporting process, feel free to contact KAFLA.

4. For any questions or concerns regarding ICE enforcement, please contact the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) at 323-801-7987 (Korean) or 1-800-399-4529 (for other languages or interpretation support).
