Founded in 1962, the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles (KAFLA) is a 2022 California Nonprofit of the Year with a mission to represent and empower the Korean American community of Los Angeles County.  We aim to protect and advocate for the rights and interests of our community, foster amicable relations and cultural exchange between Korea and the U.S., and promote interaction and understanding between the Korean American and a multitude of diverse ethnic communities.  We serve over 40,000 people annually through our wide range of programs and services.

IMPACT

  • Lead organization in California to assist 60,000 monolingual/limited English-proficient Korean American and neighboring community members receive over $50 million in economic aid, housing and food security, healthcare, and other essential resources. 

  • Multilingual one-stop center to support access to California Unemployment Insurance, CalFresh, Medi-Cal, CalWorks, SSA Retirement Benefits, SSI, Housing is Key Emergency Rental Assistance, California Mortgage Relief Program, Breathe Guaranteed Income Program, and more.

  • Raised and distributed $540,000 through our COVID-19 Relief Fund to provide direct hardship assistance to 1,141 undocumented and low-income immigrant families.  

  • Host free monthly COVID-19 and influenza mobile vaccination clinics with LADPH.

  • Produced over 600 YouTube KAFLA TV daily news and “how-to-apply” videos, garnering over 3.3 million views.

  • Distributed 4,000 safety whistles and pamphlets to promote safety and awareness on how to report hate incidents.  

  • Work with our representatives to advocate for enacting policies that promote language access, equity, public safety, better safeguard our civil rights, and seek justice for victims of racially motivated violence.  

  • Collaborate with our diverse partners to strengthen inter-community relationships and promote understanding.  

  • As part of the Forward Together Committee, co-hosted a Saigu Peace Gathering to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the 1992 Los Angeles Civil Uprising.  

  • As part of the Koreatown Redistricting Task Force, helped to enact Koreatown to be unified into a single district for the first time in history – strengthening its political representation at the local, state, and national levels. 

  • Raised and distributed $190,000 through our Help Ukraine Campaign to aid those devastated by the Russo-Ukrainian War. 

  • Raised and donated $320,381 to UNICEF USA to provide humanitarian aid to victims of the deadly Türkiye-Syria earthquake.
